“It's
comforting and liberating to know that there is a way to learn how
to become a better man in the world and it's not something really
mythical like I thought. There's work to do that gets you in that
space.”
Chris Hamilton, Internship Program Graduate
The
Men Stopping Violence Internship Program
As
part of its mission to end violence against women, Men Stopping
Violence seeks to identify, educate and mentor the young men who
will become the next generation of male allies in this movement.
The Men Stopping Violence Internship prepares young men to become
agents of social change in all areas of the lives -- their communities,
on campuses, in their workplaces and their faith communities. Graduates
of the MSV Internship Program have gone on to positions in organizations
that work to end violence against women. Many of them have taken
their training to churches and other faith communities, to the military,
and to their work in a number of different fields.
The
Internship Program provides mentors -- male and female -- whose
responsibility is to challenge and support young men while they
do the hard work of self-examination and advocacy. This intense,
two-part experience combines theory and practice. Interns participate
in classes and discussion groups with other men and work on community
projects that are designed to make their campuses and other institutions
safer for women and girls.

Overview
The 15-week Internship is conducted in partnership with sponsors
at local schools and universities, faith communities, civic groups,
and other community organizations.
Each internship draws from the same principles and offers similar
components:
- Intra-personal work on the intern’s own
use of abusive and controlling behaviors, his belief systems,
and his ability to work towards ending male violence under the
leadership of women.
- Scholarly
work focusing on the causes of male violence against women and
on MSV's philosophical framework for engaging in community-based
solutions.
- Work
with Men Stopping Violence towards community social change and
work that benefits the sponsoring organization.
Intern
Responsibilities
The
following requirements must be agreed upon and completed by interns:
- Attend
a minimum of 12 MSV Men's Education Classes.
- Create
and implement a community project based on the needs of the sponsor
and/or MSV.
- Attend
bi-weekly two-hour seminars.
- Perform
work study hours at the Men Stopping Violence office, totaling
three hours each week.
- Turn
in a "deliverable" component of the community project
to the sponsor and MSV (i.e., a research paper, survey results,
key findings, etc.).
Length
The internship lasts 15 weeks. For those men who desire
a longer Internship experience, call MSV about other options.
Supervision
Interns
will have an overall internship supervisor as well as a direct supervisor
for each component. Supervision is varied, with both weekly and
monthly meetings.
Sponsorship
Internship
Sponsorship is an opportunity for schools and organizations to improve
the climate for women and girls at their institutions. Sponsors
will be asked to:
- Identify
and recruit male students who will apply for the Internship experience.
- Offer
an incentive for credit at the institution (independent study,
project credit, CEUs, internship credit, etc.).
- Meet
twice during the 15-week period with the MSV staff.
- Identify
institution-specific objectives to be met by the intern.
- Provide
feedback to MSV for evaluation purposes.
